Single-layer drop stitch fabric is a standard material used to create flat, rigid and pressure-resistant inflatable structures. It is commonly selected for inflatable SUP boards, kayak floors, air decks, sports mats, platforms and other OEM inflatable products where weight, packability and cost must be balanced with structural stiffness.
What Is Single-Layer Drop Stitch Fabric?
Drop stitch fabric is a three-dimensional textile structure. Two parallel polyester base cloth surfaces are connected by dense internal spacer yarns. When air is added, the yarns limit the distance between the two surfaces, allowing the inflatable body to remain flat instead of expanding into a rounded tube.
In a standard single-layer construction, the base fabric is coated to provide an airtight surface, but it does not have the additional external laminated reinforcement associated with MSL, fusion or other double-layer constructions.
How the Material Structure Works
Once inflated, the spacer yarns are placed under tension. This internal connection distributes load across the two fabric surfaces and helps the finished product maintain a stable thickness and firm shape.
What gives it stiffness?
Stiffness comes from the combination of air pressure, fabric dimensions, yarn density, spacer-yarn length and the construction of the finished product.
What does “single layer” describe?
It describes the standard coated material construction without an additional laminated reinforcing layer. It does not mean the material has only one fabric surface.

Is single-layer drop stitch fabric made with only one fabric wall?
No. All standard drop-stitch materials have an upper and lower fabric wall connected by internal spacer yarns. “Single layer” means there is no additional outer laminated reinforcement layer.
Why does the factory call it double wall fabric?
The factory uses “double wall” to describe the two parallel fabric surfaces of the basic drop-stitch structure. It does not refer to the MSL or fusion double-layer construction used in some inflatable SUP boards.
